Understanding the Basics

Early intervention is key to ensuring your baby's physical development stays on track. Here's what you need to know about these common conditions.

What is Torticollis?

Often called "wryneck," it's a condition where a baby's neck muscles cause the head to tilt to one side and turn to the other. It's often present at birth or develops in the first few weeks.

  • Muscle tightness

  • Limited range of motion

  • Preferential head truning

What is Plagiocephaly?

Commonly known as "flat head syndrome," this occurs when a baby develops a flat spot on the back or side of the head, often as a result of torticollis or sleep positioning.

  • Flattening of the skull

  • Asymmetrical facial features

  • Ear misalignment

Signs to Look For

Many parents first notice these subtle signs during play or feeding. Early detection leads to better results with therapy.

Looks one way

Baby consistently looks over one shoulder or has a "favorite" side.

Feeding difficulty

Difficulty latching or preferring only one breast during feeding.

Visible flat spot

Noticeable flattening on the back or side of the skull.

Tilted position

Head is persistently tilted toward one shoulder like a "pose".
